ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
CSIO wishes to acknowledge the contribution of our members who give their time, money and expertise required to develop relevant standards.
CSIO also acknowledges the assistance given by the ACORD Standards Organization in the original development of these standards.
DEFINITION:
Standards applicable to electronic data interchange as published by the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO),
are designed to serve the public interest through eliminating inefficiencies between all parties involved in the design,
implementation or application of systems for electronic data interchange within the insurance industry.
The purpose of this and other Standards published by CSIO is to provide rules and guidelines, developed through a process
of industry-wide consensus, which defines communications procedure and message formats for broker-company within the insurance industry.
THE CENTRE FOR STUDY OF INSURANCE OPERATIONS:
The Centre for Study of Insurance Operations functions as a neutral third party, providing a structure and a forum for developing the standards.
Our committees are created of individuals from within our industry, and is structured to capitalize on the combined strengths and expertise of all its members
(brokers, broker system vendors, insurers), with no single member dominating.
PROCESS:
Members can come forward and request amendments and additions to the standards. Often it is a member, who has observed a need.
Our workgroup then evaluates the usefulness of a potential standards change, and assess the level of support in our industry.
They consider the views of all participants and develop the details of the standard by a consensus process, which includes the principles of inclusive participation,
and respect for diverse interest. Substantial agreement among members is necessary.
When a draft standard has been agreed upon, it is submitted to a technical assessment group for review, and amended if necessary, and then voted on by our members.
Our standards are living documents, continually revised and refreshed to address changing requirements and emerging technologies.
OUR GOALS:
- Develop standards that meet the needs of the Canadian Property & Casualty Insurance Industry and used from coast to coast.
- Establish a viable EDI framework that defines information formats for broker/company data communication.
- Provide maximum flexibility in the information content to be exchanged in transactions.
- Provide Standards independent of type or manufacturer of computer systems
On the global front, we work hard to ensure our national interests are advanced and Canadian voices are heard
We participate in international groups and forums that create and maintain standards aimed at insurance information technology.
And while the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations continues to develop national standards, our policy is to harmonize them with North American
and international requirements wherever it makes sense to do so.
