XML Standards Developer/Analyst



CSIO is a standards organization serving the Property and Casualty insurance industry since 1981. We are centrally located in downtown Toronto directly under the Scotia Center close to all public transportation.

Our Mission

CSIO's central mandate is to seek ways to provide a competitive advantage for the Independent Broker Distribution Channel. The activities resulting from this mandate are diverse and are expanding as technological opportunities broaden.

Job Role Summary:

The XML developer/analyst provides quality technical support to our members for CSIO XML standards, uses technical abilities to update the standards and acts as presenter and facilitator for XML workshops and Standards workgroups.

Key Responsibilities:


The XML Standards developer/analyst acts as Technical support for CSIO XML standards for its members:
  • Solving technical issues using the CSIO XML schemas.
  • Helping members find information in the standards and clarifying the use of various aggregates and elements.
  • XML standards developer/analyst will act as an authority, in collaboration with our members, on what can and cannot be done within the standards.
  • Responsible for resolving ambiguities in the XML standards and proposing changes to the standards as necessary.
  • Interfaces with various broker organizations as the CSIO standards expert for initiatives relating to real-time transactions.
  • Tests XML transactions for members to validate or find errors and recommend changes.
The XML Standards developer/analyst acts as programmer for changes to CSIO XML standards:
  • Using knowledge of java, the developer/analyst must update and run several java programs to create new standard releases.
  • Updates several XML documents with changes to the standards as proposed in the National Standards Workgroup to create the new version.
  • Using knowledge of HTML, updates files to create the ACORD-CSIO-Help-Spec file.
  • The developer/analyst uses knowledge of EDI to XML mapping to update mapping documents and spreadsheets.
  • Possesses an in-depth knowledge of the CSIO XML standards and how they relate to EDI and Forms to be used in the mapping of forms from EDI to XML.
The XML Standards developer/analyst acts as instructor, presenter and facilitator:
  • The XML developer/analyst facilitates the National Standards Workgroups and Technical meetings where the proposed changes to the CSIO XML standards are presented, analysed, and discussed.
  • Using strong knowledge of the CSIO schemas and communication skills, the developer/analyst provides training sessions and workshops.

Skills and abilities:


Programming skills:
  • Technical or Computer Science degree
  • XML and XSL
  • Knowledge of XML schemas, DTDs, Web Services: SOAP and WSDL
  • Experience developing Java-based web applications, preferably in ColdFusion
  • Basic web development: HTML, JavaScript, CSS
  • SQL, basic knowledge of databases, Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft Office: PowerPoint, Excel and Word
Communication skills, analytical abilities and insurance knowledge:
  • Logical and analytical thought process to amend and update CSIO XML standards.
  • Ability to consolidate and organize large amounts of data.
  • Communicate concepts and ideas effectively.
  • Teaching/tutoring abilities to prepare and deliver presentations, facilitate workgroups and provide training.
  • Experience modeling insurance policy data information or experience in Property and Casualty insurance in Canada in order to match the technical requirements with industry needs.
